Conceptual Photography by Kanako Sasaki

Kanako Sasaki

Kanako Sasaki is a Japanese conceptual photographer whose work has been exhibited throughout the world. The images below are from her series Walking in the Jungle, which she created after reading the Diary of Anne Frank. Kanako recreates historical events and mixes them with her own memories and imagination. In this way she creates situations that are not fiction, yet they are not non-fiction either. Her inspiration comes from written texts, oral stories and fragmented narratives that create new dimensions of meaning.

Kanako Sasaki (born 1976 in Sendai, Japan) lives and works in Sendai. She earned an MFA in Photography, Video and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts, New York and also studied at the Royal College of Art, London, UK. Recently, she premiered her video work Okinawa Ark in Tokyo for the Shiseido Art Egg Award, which was shown in Miami, Bolivia and Singapore. Sasaki has exhibited her work in Japan, Europe, and the United States at venues including Gallery 10G in New York and Dina Mitrani Gallery in Miami, FL. Through her creative technique, the historical narratives immediately become more familiar and her individual developments are dramatized. She is an artist who conveys to us the world’s truths in a way that mass media cannot.
